The Skillman Foundation has worked to improve the lives of Detroit children for more than 50 years. In recent years, we’ve made the determination that we must be intentional about making the neighborhoods where we work safer, or our investments won’t have the impact we want. Blight is a huge safety concern in neighborhoods like Brightmoor, and we’ve been thrilled to build a new partnership to tackle that work with The Blight Authority, which has brought innovative thinking, deep passion, a professional know-how and a commitment to working with the community to the work that’s necessary to bring real, lasting change for Detroit kids.
“The DTE Energy Foundation’s partnership with the Blight Authority is part of a broader commitment to create safer, more vibrant city neighborhoods for people to live, work and enjoy.”

“When I first read about The Blight Authority and their mission, it piqued my interest; here is an opportunity to have an impact on the physical environment of Detroit’s neighborhoods. The more I learned and witnessed, blight elimination has many immediate tangible benefits: reduction in fires, crime, safer streets for school children, while stabilizing home values. Detroit has always been a city of neighborhoods, often with their own distinct sense of community; the Brightmoor community is no exception. The Brightmoor community welcomed The Blight Authority to address blight and during the first phase 28 jobs were created for local residents. As a result the community took particular pride and ownership for transforming the neighborhood.” – James A. Jacob CEO, Ajax Paving industries, Inc.
