Town Monopoly Game

We give every student a portion of the town to oversee. They learn about how the town works and they act as a representative. They think about what its concerns are and how to improve it. The school reviews the proposals with the town and chooses wining ideas. The portions of the town are shares, not geographical so they can be traded like in the game monopoly. Students might buy a downtown property or a residential street. The town reassesses the property every year, so students want to pay attention to what is happening in the town, and they want to propose ideas that will benefit their property. The school reserves part of the budget for these grants because it makes civic engagement real and brings everybody together. My experience with volunteer hours now is that students go through the motions but it is more paperwork than anything else so they can check off the box and "look good" for college.
